Surfing the Internet, playing games and hanging out on social networks are important for teens’ development, a large study of online use has revealed recently. More than 800 teens and parents took part in the three-year US project.
\"They are learning the technological skills needed for the contemporary world. They are learning how to communicate online, create a home page and post links. All these things were regarded as highly sophisticated 10 years ago but young people today think them a piece of cake,\" said the report’s author, Dr Mimi Ito.
Over the period of the study, researchers observed users for more than 5,000 hours. The object of the project was to make out how teens use social media to socialize(社会化), learn and relax.
Dr Ito said that connecting online with friends via social networks such as My Space and Face book was where teens now\" hang out\compared to the usual public places like shopping malls, the streets and parks. The Internet provides teens the opportunity to explore their
own creativity and take a deep dive into a subject.
The researchers discovered a digital divide between those who have access to the web and those who do not. \"The quality of access is what matters for some kids who have to just rely on the library and school to go online. It is often limited on access to certain sites,\" said Dr Ito.
Teens don’t want their parents to know much about their Internet activities and most parents know very little about what their kids are doing online, so they are struggling to give help. It is therefore necessary for parents to reconsider the role the Internet plays in teen development, learn about it, and offer their help when needed.
Connie Yowell, the MacArthur Foundation’s education director, concluded that learning today is becoming increasingly networked, which has created a new way to look at how young people are being and should be taught.

We share our environment with many living things, but few give us more pleasure than birds. Their beauty and songs have become part of our understanding of what a healthy environment should be.
Yet a report released in March shows that many types of American birds are in trouble. It says that nearly one third of about eight hundred bird species in the United States are threatened in some way.
Birds depend on their environment to provide food and shelter. The report said that loss of habitat is the biggest threat to American birds. Land development and agriculture are just two uses of natural resources that change and destroy the environment that birds need. The cutting down of forests is threatening woodland species like the Northern Spotted Owl.
In addition to ____________, birds face many other man-made threats. The report says up to one billion birds die each year from flying into objects like power lines, windows and tall buildings.
Climate change is one of the least understood threats to birds. Rising temperatures have had an effect on migratory birds (候鸟). Studies show that red-winged blackbirds and eastern bluebirds are laying their eggs earlier because of higher temperature. The fear is that, as birds move to nesting areas earlier, they will arrive before food is available. Non-native plants, animals and diseases are also big threats. Non-native animals like rats and cats kill flightless birds and raid (袭击) their nests.
Partnerships between public, private and tribal groups can help to provide the resources needed to protect America’s birds. Americans spend one hundred and twenty-two billion dollars on watching wildlife each year. And millions of Americans enjoy watching birds. But the economic value of wild birds is only part of their importance. They also represent a part of a healthy environment that cannot be replaced.
76. List three types of threats that American birds face mentioned in the text.
