摘要：It is hereby disclosed an image coding method for block-wise coding a digitalimage divided into a plurality of blocks, wherein each block is a two-dimensional blockand has a plurality of pixels, the method coding each block as a target block by applyingthe steps of: determining (1) mode information (12) indicating a coding mode showing astatus of pixels of a target block; and coding (3) pixel data of the target block, using thedetermined mode information (12) of the target block, characterized by coding (2) thedetermined mode information (12) on a per target block basis, by referring to the modeinformation of a plurality of previously coded blocks, each of which is adjacent to thetarget block within the same picture, and wherein the mode information indicating acoding mode, which is dominant in the plurality of previously coded blocks, is encodedwith a shorter codeword than other mode information. Also the corresponding imageencoder is hereby disclosed.
